google chrome vs chromium

For those who don’t know, there is a new browser out there called google chrome.

What even fewer people realise, is that chrome is based on a browser called chromium.

I really like how chrome operates (but not the user interface, nor the lack of / difficulty in loading, useful plugins.

At first glance, both Chrome and Chromium look identical, except chrome has a small google logo on the top bar.

But dig a little deeper, and you notice a few minor differences:

Both are very quick.

Both have a pleasingly simple interface (too simple for me, but I think most people will like it).

Personally, I prefer Chromium, but there is hardly any difference between the two.

Thanks for the quick review. I use Firefox as my main browser, however as a webmaster, I have to design for multiple browsers to make sure things work in all browsers.

    <3 Chromium

Also Chromium is still part of Google. What is it with the licensing are you implying that “people” have an issue with?

Mozilla offices are mostly all within the GooglePlex.

And we all know who MozDev are yes?

Try http://www.codeweavers.com/services/ports/chromium/ if you are looking for pain-free builds for OSX or Linux

  7. Computer Help says:

Licensing: the chrome EULA went something like:

By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services

ie anything you write over the net using chrome, becomes the property of Google… to do with as they please.

They have now appropriately altered the offending bits.

  8. Todd says:

That seems a bit extreme, do they own it while it’s in transit or just anything inputted through that framework even if it falls to rest on hardware outside of their jusisdiction?

Sound very far fetched to me and the only reason I can rationally conclude for it is having gone to release with a draft terms and conditions which have since been revised or they are extending some form of legal indemnity on the data to cover any possible abuse of their services.

While you may not notice any speed difference between Google Chrome and Chromium, but you will notice a speed difference between the two if your system is running very very low in memory. Chromium will load a page quicker than Google Chrome in this situation, and I just don’t know why. I haven’t seen anyone mentioned about this point on the Internet so far … that’s weird.

Two differences I see in their performance:
    - Chrome works with html5 video; chromium doesn’t yet
    - Adding Chrome to my ubuntu installation results in lloonngggg wait times for the repositories to load.

Does anyone know if there are any pitfalls to installing both?

    Update / Correction:
    - Chromium *does* work with html5 videos
    - the auto-translate option is smoother on Chrome than on Chromium
