my first business client

Rang a client last week… just to see if his computer was working ok (he had problems with the DVD buring software (Nero) & it wouldn’t uninstall… had to clean all references from the winXP registry).

Anyway, he was very impressed with how the computer was running, & he asked if I did services for businesses (I said yes). So he said that he would use computer aid for fixing computers in the small company he works in.

This is a client that a larger company has lost because of poor customer service… I just need more people like this. I guess I need a little patience…

Advertising part 5 (ebay)

I’ve done some reading on ebay… Although I’ve bought over 20 items, I’ve only sold 2, & my other half is looking to setup a web shop & probably an ebay shop…

I’ve been reading those “make lotsa of money on ebay” articles that are all over the internet… they are just a combination of standard marketing know-how & how to apply it to ebay (with some technical ebay bits thrown in).

But what really caught my eye was: you can also advertise services on ebay… and the costs are very very low. Hmmm … maybe I should try it.

So, today I decided to auction 2 hours of Computer Aid time. Starting bid is $1, & the Auction cost me $1.09 … Given that I haven’t got many clients yet, It won’t matter if I do a few jobs for just $1… The publicity I get, should be a lot more valuable.

Given the costs, I’ll probably try it for a few months, in a few different categories & then judge the response rate.

Advertising part 4

Spent last week & the weekend working on my web page & on domain names, hosting, etc.

I got the computer-aid.com.au domain for 2 years, for $50 ($25 per year). This is from www.domaincentral.com.au

I’ve also got a great hosting deal from home-business-host.com They have a few packages, but I chose the $10.95 per month package. other packages are $8.95, $12.95, $15.95

Spent most of this morning changing all my internet business listing, so that they would have my email AND my domain. So far, I have updated:

Caboolture Shire council: http://www.caboolturesc.qld.gov.au/obd/default.asp

Street-directory:
http://www.street-directory.com.au

Directory Australia
www.DirectoryAustralia.com.au

Langa List email newsletter: http://www.langa.com/newsletter.htm

I’ve also spent some time investigating “SEO” or search engine optimisations: ie how to make it to the top (or near the top) of search engines (eg google).
I now know enough to help move the computer-aid web site up a few notches.

SEO is a very hazy area. There is no software out there that can do a good optimisation, it depends a lot on your type of business & you need to do some routine “work” to make it happen.
